Publishing goals at CLP

Cowboy Logic uses a slightly different approach to finding the right projects to publish. We don't have a problem publishing anything but hate, because we hate, hate degradation of any one or thing, or weird shit with kids and animals. Our focus crosses genres, but is centered on the following:
- Quality Fiction or damn good factual - Although a pain in the ass for everyone involved but the reader, our main focus is the quality of the story and mind behind the words. Yes, we want to hit perfect grammar, spelling and formatting standards, but the vision of perfect changes with the flavor of the work from product to product. For instance, some stories need to have sentences that start with And, But, or Or, and that is one of my pet peeves. In some cases it is needed for the 3 dimensional story effect. The biggest target here is, the reader is challenged and puts the book down with a smile when done, feeling like they just did something important. We don't want to publish fodder.
- Any Genre mixed with Historical Fiction will get my attention long enough to evaluate the work.
- Any combination of Historical Fantasy will make me look twice. This has to do with Magic, Legend, Afterlife, etc. but Vampires and comic book heroes are overdone right now.
- Science Fiction and Speculative fiction where I get the new car smell when I read the manuscript. No worn out cookie cutters.
- High Drama mystery, murder, horror where you can't put the book down, but your reading between your fingers because your so damn scared.
- Romance or erotica need to be spice in a bigger theme, unless they are the next huge cult favorite that doesn't put anyone to sleep. An erotica piece would have to carry a dynamite plot, some major character work and a complete disassociation from the tired porn tales in the back rooms of the video store. I'm talking Wild Orchid or Basic Instinct.
- Beyond these criteria, I will consider anything that can raise my eyebrows, make money and be promoted by an author who dosn't mind knocking the corners off and working through the painful process with a CLP editor. The story may be perfect for another publisher, but can't fit here, or it may be perfect for CLP and wrong for any other publisher.
We will lean toward new writers who have the right stuff.
Group members have an open offer to submit manuscripts to me at

I want to bring your attention to this topic team. Many of you are working on the next great novel block buster, but are unsure of the process, the hoops you need to jump through, or whether you have the right stuff.
I am in a position now to begin looking through these manuscripts now, and am busy with a couple of members works as we speak. If you have something you are not sure you want to share with the team, send it to me alone, but take note and pay attention to what Bill has just done. He was able to use this group to knock some of the corners off his work, and is in the process of polishing now. The result is, his name is going up in lights very soon. He will be empowered to market and promote his work, alongside CLP, and will be officially published in a world where quantity has drowned out quality. His book will be a new standard to inspire the rest of us to greatness.
Get involved and get off your couch. TV is not that good anymore...

I am working on something now, but I am not sure if it will be fiction or creative non-fiction. It is good to hear non-fiction is now an option.
